Audacity® is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. You can download the free software for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. The release of Audacity 1.2.6 is a stable release with complete documentation for help. The latest release of Audacity is 1.3.7 and is in beta at this time and recommended for "advanced" users. Audacity Web Site can be found at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/.
